Blazing Saddles

It's hard to believe that Blazing Saddles is 30 years old. (I also didn't remember that it came out the same year as Young Frankenstein— Mel Brooks must have been really busy!) At any rate, AMC was showing Blazing Saddles the other night, and I tuned in. I was hoping that AMC wouldn't completely butcher it, but they did. It's practically impossible to appreciate it when they bleep the word "nigger" throughout.

My favorite part from the whole movie: The Waco Kid (Gene Wilder) consoles Sheriff Bart (Cleavon Little), saying "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons."

Personally, I like the Lili Von Shtupp show featuring these memorable quotes (as well as I can remember):
Is that a ten gallon hat or are you just enjoying the show?
Men are always coming and going, going and coming [pause] and always too soon.

How did they play the scene with Bart holding a gun to his head and yelling "Stay back! Or the nigger gets it!"? (Potentially the funniest scene in the whole, I think.)

What happened to Mel between this movie and Spaceballs so that he became unfunny?

Spaceballs was so not funny.

I love "Madam, I hate to disillusion you, but you're sucking my arm."

Anything with Madelaine Kahn in it is gold.

re: Sheriff Bart holding himself hostage

As I recall, they hacked this part really badly. I think the line was, "Stay back or the nig gets it." Almost every instance of "the N-word" was cut to "nih" or "nig". Ludicrous.

re: Lili Von Shtupp

I stopped watching and went to bed, so I missed most of the great scenes with Madeline Kahn (including "Is it true how zey say zat you people are… gifted?").
