Weekend quickies!

  • The Boston Globe has a fun interview with two local entrepreneurs' quest for the perfect bagel. Their solution? The bagels are made in New York, and you finish baking them at home. Ray's New York Bagels stack up pretty well in a blind taste test, and they're readily available at most grocery stores in the area. Unfortunately, they don't make salt, poppyseed, or egg.
  • Swedish archaeologists have found a ship from the late 1300s, buried in the mud. This is a couple hundred years earlier than the other famous recorded shipwreck, the Vasa.
  • Gooney birds! Gooney birds!

Apparently they are available at Giant here in PA (the bagels, not the Gooney birds). I will look for them next time.

Well, I picked up a pack (actually 2 as they were BOGO free) of Ray's. Well, you can call them Ray's or you can call them Jay's or you can call them Jay's Ray's, oh nevermind.
They are not bad FOR FROZEN PREFAB BAGELS but there is no mistaking them for NY bagels.

Wow, thanks for the speedy review. We really have nowhere to get bagels near us— there used to be a Brueggers in the next town, but they closed. (It's a Dunkin' Donuts now, and I can't stand their bagels.) So I'm hoping that Ray's will be close enough…

Did the Giant Iggle carry the bialys (sp?) too, or just the bagels?

Nope. No bialys (if you pronounce it bee-OL-is it sounds like a drug, perhaps, specially formulated for Jews with ED). They only had plain, onion and cinnamon raisin. I only got plain because onion is no good for PB&J and cinnamon raisin just isn't my thing.

Cinnamon raisin is my least favorite. I like sesame seed or poppyseed with PB&J, and onion/ garlic/ everything for egg sammiches or with good cream cheese.
