April is the cruelest month

Overheard in Cambridge, New England Spring edition:

"In San Francisco, they aren't wearing coats!"
— Woman, muttering as she walked head-on into the brisk wind this morning.

Although it is not always readily apparent, spring is here. The blackbirds are back, and singing loudly. The snowdrops have been up for some time, and the crocuses have been up for over a week. The snow piles are mostly melted, or at least greatly reduced. Erikson's Dairy has re-opened. (Ice cream! Ice cream!) Last night, it poured down rain while it thundered and lightninged. I eagerly await the chorus of spring peepers.

Bonus apocrypha: Mark Twain never said "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

I actually heard peepers yesterday afternoon around 5 PM! A very welcome sign of Spring.

My early crocuses came up and bloomed last week just to get snowed on Friday night and wilt. The later ones are blooming now. Lots of other stuff coming up in the garden. The birds are singing their spring songs and the horses are sheddng like crazy.

Now if the weather will just get more Spring-like...

I have already planted spring peas for the last two weeks. I will plany another row this weekend.

The seed-started eggplants and False-Alarm Jalepeneos have sprouted and are looking fine.

Hurray Spring!!

I had never even heard of a False-Alarm Jalapeño. (I had to Google it.) As a chilihead, though, my first thought was, What's the point? Maybe they should make a False-Alarm Habañero first, then we'll talk.

Oh, but the do have a false alarm habenero! It is from Burpee and it is called "Zavory Hot Pepper".

I am trying the 'False Alarm Jalapeno' because I have tried growing many 'mild' peppers and they always grow very hot in my garden, even if they are supposed to be mild. So I will try this one for 2008.

The 'False Alarm Jalapeno' was reviewed by someone who tried them out:

the False Alarm Hybrid pepper is the best tasting vegtable I've produced. It is very easy to grow and the peppers are soooo sweet when you pick them green, you can eat them right off the plant. They develop a little heat if you let them mature fully red if thats what you like.

I thought that sounded good.

I'm intrigued by the Zavory Hot Pepper. We grew some hot peppers (maybe 5 years ago?). They weren't super-hot, but as I recall it was kind of a wet summer. Maybe I'll try a few in pots. We're also going to try growing arugula.
